The Enchanting Beauty of the Green-Tailed Sunbird

The green-tailed sunbird, scientifically known as Aethopyga nipalensis, or Nepal yellow-backed sunbird, belongs to the Nectariniidae family.

This species can be found in various natural habitats such as temperate forests, as well as subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. In southeast Szechwan and Yunnan, it specifically resides in open mountain woods characterized by trees covered in moss, at elevations ranging from 1825 to 3350 meters.

Although the species’ name accurately describes its physical characteristics, the male green-tailed sunbird’s bright greenish-blue head is much more eye-catching than its tail.

Additionally, it showcases a red upper back and vibrant yellow underparts. On the other hand, the female sunbird displays an olive-yellow coloration with lighter underparts and a grayish head.

It is worth noting that the female lacks a strongly contrasting pale rump patch, distinguishing it from the female Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird. The green-tailed sunbird typically inhabits montane and hill forests, as well as forest edges.
