Although there are many brightly colored and affordable parrot species, the wealthy, especially those with unique tastes, often seek out a rare and exotic pet like the Keel Billed Toucan.

The Keel Billed Toucan is one of the most astonishingly shaped birds in the world, found in the rainforests of Central and South America. Its scientific name is Ramphastos sulphuratus.

These birds possess an incredibly large beak, which can reach up to 20cm in length and is adorned with multiple colors.

Their beaks feature a blend of green, red, and yellow hues.

With a length equivalent to a part of their body, the toucan’s beak resembles two colorful boats overlaid upon each other.

This impressive beak serves both as a tool to attract mates during the breeding season and as a means of defense against enemies.

Studies have shown that the toucan’s beak contains numerous blood vessels, allowing them to regulate the blood flow to their beaks according to the surrounding environmental conditions. Experts used infrared cameras capable of detecting changes in surface temperature to monitor the heat on the surface of the toucan’s beak.

In cold weather, the toucan reduces blood flow to its beak to maintain its body temperature, and conversely, it cools down its body by increasing blood flow to the beak. Researchers were surprised to conclude, “The toucan’s beak acts like a thermostat for their body temperature.”

Elephants, for example, use their large ears to cool their bodies. The same goes for certain rabbit species. So, why not consider that the toucan’s large beak may have a similar function!” – said evolutionary physiologist Glenn J. Tattersall, head of the research team at Brock University.

The toucan’s body is covered with black feathers, while its neck and chest are adorned with golden plumage.

The “boat-beaked” toucan lives in tree hollows and often forms small family groups, feasting on fruits and large insects.

These birds are known for their loud calls, frequently producing noisy and croaky sounds in the forest, earning them the nickname “chatty birds.”

Their primary diet includes various fruits, insects, eggs, and reptiles.

Additionally, despite being relatively short, their legs are exceptionally strong.

Toucans can be found for sale at around 5,000 USD, and the price can even reach up to 10,000 USD for particularly beautiful beaks.
