Mum Embraces Unique Choice, Naming Baby ‘Lockie’ in Tribute to Lockdown
Amidst the challenges and uncertainties brought by the Coronavirus pandemic, Jodi Cross, a 36-year-old hairdresser from Bedfordshire, found a silver lining. Jodi and her husband Rob had been trying to conceive for a year but faced difficulties until the second lockdown in 2021 provided them with a much-needed opportunity. With more time on their hands due to furlough, Jodi and Rob finally welcomed their baby girl into the world on November 28, 2021, and decided to pay homage to the remarkable period by giving her a distinctive name – ‘Lockie.’
While some may find it peculiar, Jodi proudly stands by their choice, emphasizing that lockdown was a turning point in their lives, despite the challenges brought about by the pandemic. She explains, “We had been trying for a year to get pregnant, and lockdown meant I was furloughed and Rob was working less. We relaxed and had more time to focus on starting a family, leading to the wonderful news of my pregnancy.”
As their daughter entered the world, a new strain of Covid, Omicron, began to emerge. This realization further solidified their decision to name her Lockie, symbolizing her status as a “lockdown baby.” Jodi expresses, “We really liked the name, and lockdown was a good time in our lives because it was so relaxing.”
Jodi dismisses any concerns or criticisms about their choice, firmly stating, “People might not like the name, but I don’t care what they think.” For her and Rob, lockdown provided an unexpected respite, a period of tranquility and togetherness. Being at home together allowed them to cherish precious moments and find solace amidst the uncertain times. Jodi reflects, “With both of us being home, we had no worries and found it really relaxing. We named her after a good time, not a bad one.”
Interestingly, there were additional factors that influenced their unique name selection. Jodi shares, “There was a girl who came into the salon whose surname was Lockey at the time we were considering names – and then we got married in Gretna Green in Scotland, where there are lots of locks. The primary reason was definitely lockdown, but the name just felt right.”
While Jodi acknowledges that she hasn’t encountered negative reactions to Lockie’s name directly, she remains indifferent to others’ opinions, focusing on the personal significance it holds for their family. She even envisions that their story might inspire others, leading to Lockie becoming a popular name choice in the future.
In the end, Lockie’s name serves as a cherished reminder of the joy and serenity Jodi and Rob experienced during an otherwise challenging time. It symbolizes resilience, love, and the ability to find happiness amidst adversity. And for this family, Lockie’s name will forever embody their unique and beautiful journey into parenthood.
