Tears of Joy Retired Police Dog and Handler Reunite in a Touching Display of Unwavering Bond
Since retiring in June 2019, this is the first time that police dog Wangwang has reunited with the soldier who trained and guided her throughout her service.
Wangwang was once a member of the police dog team at the security checkpoints in Tich Xuyen district, Ha Nam province, China. However, when she reached retirement age, in June 2019, the 8-year-old German Shepherd had to part ways with her military handler, who had trained her for many years.
Then, on a New Year’s Day in 2021, while patrolling a neighborhood near Wangwang’s old home, the military officer unexpectedly visited his former four-legged companion. In a video clip posted on Douyin by the Tich Xuyen Police Department, the officer called out Wangwang’s name while standing in front of the door of their old “workplace.”
Recognizing the familiar voice and figure, Wangwang joyfully rushed out of the door and leaped into the arms of her handler. With her paws affectionately touching her trainer’s legs, the police dog was visibly choked up with unexpected happiness.
The heartwarming reunion between Wangwang and her training officer left Chinese netizens deeply moved. One commentator remarked, “Look at those tears streaming down her face. Dogs truly are incredibly loyal companions. Treat them well!”
“Just by looking at her, you can tell how much Wangwang missed her trainer,” another person said. “You can feel it in her exuberant happiness.” Meanwhile, many people wondered why Wangwang wasn’t allowed to stay with her former trainer, despite their strong bond.
In response to this question, the Tich Xuyen Police Department explained, “At the training center, all the police dogs are provided with ample food and care. However, our officers do not have the time to play or physically train the retired service dogs. Instead of staying at the center, they are transferred to new families where they can receive better care.”
