Lionel Messi Sets New Guinness World Records, Surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo

In an exciting update, Guinness World Records announced on August 1, that Lionel Messi has now earned an impressive 41 world records, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo by one title.

Among football players, Messi and Ronaldo dominate the world records category, with a combined total of 81 Guinness-recognized accolades. No other player has achieved more than 10 records. Striker Robert Lewandowski stands at third place with nine records, followed by Kylian Mbappe with five and Neymar with four.

Messi’s most recent records recognized by Guinness are “Most Matches Played in World Cup” with 26 matches and “Most Goals Scored in World Cup as a Team Captain” with seven goals. Both records were established after the World Cup final on December 18, 2022, where Messi’s brace led Argentina to victory.

During the same World Cup in 2022, Messi also secured another record, becoming the first player to provide assists in five different World Cup tournaments. This record was set when he assisted Enzo Fernandez’s goal against Mexico at Lusail Stadium on November 26, 2022.

On the other hand, Ronaldo’s latest Guinness World Records include “Most Followed Person on Instagram” with over 565 million followers as of March 24, 2023, and “Most Followed Man on Instagram” with his current count exceeding 598 million.

 

Guinness World Records (GWR) is an organization that documents and verifies various records, founded in 1955 in the United Kingdom. Currently, GWR has recorded over 40,000 records. The title for the most Guinness World Records held goes to American citizen Ashrita Furman, who has achieved more than 600 records and currently holds over 200 of them.

Notably, Ronaldo celebrated a Guinness World Record milestone on his personal page when he surpassed Ali Daei to become the male player with the most goals for a national team. He achieved this feat by scoring 123 goals in 200 appearances for Portugal.
