David Beckham, the President of Inter Miami Club and former player, has taken action against goalkeeper Nick Marsman due to his critical comments about Lionel Messi’s success at the club.

Marsman’s contract was bought out from the MLS by Beckham, and he was subsequently fired.

In June, 32-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Nick Marsman expressed his skepticism about Messi’s move to Inter Miami in an interview with ESPN. He commented, “Personally, I think Inter Miami Club is not ready for Messi’s arrival. We just have a makeshift stadium, everyone including players can walk on the pitch, there’s no gate. We also left the field without security. I don’t think they’re ready yet.”

At that time, news broke that Messi declined to renew with PSG and didn’t attend a planned event in Saudi Arabia. A return to his former club Barcelona was also unlikely due to financial constraints. In a surprising move, Messi chose to join Inter Miami.

Upon his arrival in the US, Messi had a remarkable impact, scoring 7 goals and providing 1 assist in just 4 matches for Inter Miami. The team, chaired and co-owned by David Beckham, saw an upturn in their performance. Under Messi’s influence, Inter Miami won all 4 matches and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup. Prior to Messi’s arrival, the team struggled with a series of 11 matches, managing only 3 draws and 8 losses.

The early successes of Messi proved the goalkeeper’s criticism wrong. Messi not only played brilliantly but also attracted large audiences to the stadiums, benefiting teams like FC Dallas.

On August 7th, Inter Miami Club officially announced, “Today, Inter Miami has exercised the right to buy back the contract of goalkeeper Nick Marsman in the MLS, and release the player from the team.” The decision was made by David Beckham, who found Marsman’s comments inconsistent with the team’s interests and commercial rights. The MLS has a rule that permits clubs to terminate player contracts if their negative comments affect the team’s commercial interests.
