Messi Surpasses Ronaldo’s Record with Another Scoring Feat
Lionel Messi’s remarkable performance continues to make waves in the world of football, as he breaks yet another record previously held by Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi’s double strike against Dallas FC on August 6th propelled him beyond Ronaldo’s tally of consecutive years with over 20 goals across all competitions.
During his appearance for Inter Miami, Messi unleashed two goals from beyond the penalty area, contributing to his impressive record of 21 goals in 29 games in 2023, along with eight assists. This extraordinary achievement marks the 17th consecutive year that Messi has notched more than 20 goals, allowing him to eclipse Ronaldo’s previous record.
Cristiano Ronaldo maintained a streak of over 20 goals for 16 consecutive years, spanning from 2006 to 2021. However, this sequence came to a halt in 2022 when he managed 16 goals in 46 matches.
In the current year, Messi’s statistics showcase 21 goals and eight assists in 29 games, yielding an average of scoring or assisting in every match. Ronaldo, on the other hand, secured 22 goals and provided two assists in 27 matches. Although Ronaldo boasts a slightly superior scoring performance with an average of 106 minutes per goal compared to Messi’s 121 minutes per goal, Messi’s consistent output remains impressive.
Over the past 22 years, Messi has outperformed Ronaldo in terms of goal-scoring in eight years: 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022. This difference is partially attributed to Messi being two years younger than Ronaldo. The peak of Messi’s career was in 2012, when he netted an astonishing 91 goals, securing a Guinness World Record. It was during this year that the disparity in their scoring records was the most pronounced, with Messi leading by 28 goals.
