Assessing Bruno Fernandes’ Captaincy: A Debate on It’s All Kicking Off Podcast

On the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Chris Sutton expressed his frustration with Bruno Fernandes’ reactions. Bruno Fernandes, who took over the captaincy of Manchester United from Harry Maguire this summer, showed disappointment in the club’s 0-2 defeat to Tottenham. He was cautioned by referee Michael Oliver for dissent during the match.

After the game, Bruno continued to publicly express his frustration and demanded an apology from the PGMOL refereeing authority for denying 2 penalties to Man Utd. Once again, the Portuguese player complained about the referee’s management of the match, which drew strong criticism from former Blackburn and Chelsea striker Chris Sutton. When asked if the referee was the reason for Bruno’s disappointment, Sutton replied on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast:

“Not at all. First and foremost, Bruno Fernandes needs to reflect on himself and his team before considering the decisions coming from the referee.”

“For me, Bruno Fernandes shouldn’t be the captain of Manchester United. He isn’t a natural leader. Man Utd seems to be stuck, resembling the pre-season phase, and Bruno needs to step up to display better leadership qualities instead of blaming the referee.”
