Cristiano Ronaldo Achieves Countless Records in 20 Years of Service for Portugal

Portugal’s national coach, Roberto Martinez, has lauded Cristiano Ronaldo as the striker marks 20 years of dedication to the country’s Selecao squad. Since making his debut in 2003 against Kazakhstan on August 20, the 38-year-old has amassed an impressive 123 goals in 200 appearances, solidifying his position as the highest scorer in international football history.

In a statement released by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Coach Martinez shared his admiration: “I think there are many players who can win titles and create numerous memories, but 20 years of involvement with the team and this 200th match are unique achievements in international football. This accomplishment can only belong to Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Martinez emphasized the pivotal role Ronaldo plays in the squad, stating: “Having a player with 20 years of experience in the national team provides an advantage against opponents, as Ronaldo’s high-quality contribution becomes a driving force for the team.”

He continued, “Having a player with 200 appearances is an extraordinary case in world football. It instills confidence in the dressing room, and unsurprisingly, Ronaldo is the best player in the world.”

Over his more than 15,000 minutes on the field for the national team, Ronaldo played a key role in Portugal’s victory in Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.

Fernando Gomes, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, also praised the Al Nassr striker as he completed two decades of service with the national team: “This is a remarkable feat. Ronaldo’s dedication goes far beyond a 20-year commitment to the Portuguese national team. It’s impressive how a player of Ronaldo’s influence has maintained his stature for so long, becoming truly iconic.”

Gomes added, “Throughout these 20 years at the peak of his career, Ronaldo’s service for the national team has been undeniably successful. He and his teammates have achieved great heights, winning Euro 2016 and the Confederations Cup in 2019.”

The 5-time Ballon d’Or winner has set a new record with his 200 appearances for the national team. During Ronaldo’s tenure, Portugal advanced to the knockout stages of every World Cup, reaching a peak of 4th place in 2006.

Presently, the Manchester United striker, also representing Al Nassr, has encountered two losses at the beginning of the Saudi Arabian national championship season. An injury prevented him from participating in the opening match against Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq. Prior to this, Ronaldo’s inspiring performance helped lead Al Nassr to victory in the Saudi Arabia Club Cup against Al Hilal.
