Dog Who Turned To Stone Overcomes Fear of Human Touch and Demands Belly Rubs
This 5-year-old stray dog was so gravely ill from mange that her face appeared petrified. When the rescue organization arrived to save her from the streets near Athens, Greece, responding to a heartfelt plea posted on Facebook, the dog’s fear made it nearly impossible to approach her. Terrified, she would bolt away at the mere sight of people drawing near. Yet, the compassionate rescuers persisted, determined to save her.
The dog, given the name Petra, which means “stone” in Greek, required extensive treatment for various ailments, including mange and an infection caused by insects. “I don’t believe she had ever experienced human touch before. She had never even been approached,” shared Valia Orfanidou from Save a Greek Stray shelter, speaking to Bored Panda.
However, the rescuers refused to surrender, and as each week passed, Petra gradually grew more receptive to their presence. “I could stroke her, but she didn’t derive any pleasure from it – she didn’t comprehend the meaning of affectionate touch,” added Orfanidou. “However, after a few months, she began to seek out affection, and now she adores having her belly rubbed – she actively asks for it!”
Today, Petra is in good health, yearning to love and be loved.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to Valia Orfanidou for sharing Petra’s story, highlighting the resilience and capacity for love that resides within every living being.
