Introducing the Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher – Master of stillness, birds can remain motionless for extended periods
Meet the Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher – a master of stillness! This small and almost fluorescent orange forest kingfisher is native to Madagascar, where it is commonly found in the eastern and northern rainforests. It can also be spotted in some areas of the western deciduous forest.
One of its remarkable features is its ability to remain motionless for extended periods, patiently waiting for the perfect moment to dart after its prey, often targeting frogs. You’ll recognize its call as a harsh “tshik,” which it often utters while in flight.
The Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher stands out from the Malagasy Kingfisher due to its orange upperparts and bill. While both species are found in Madagascar, the Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher prefers the forest habitat, while the Malagasy Kingfisher is commonly found in wetlands.
With its striking appearance and incredible hunting skills, the Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher is truly a fascinating bird to observe in its natural habitat.
