Millions shed tears in front of these brave mothers, despite their life-threatening conditions, in order to give birth to healthy children.
In July, the story of an unlucky Chinese mother who suffered from brittle bone disease and spinal deformity, along with various other illnesses, gained attention worldwide. Her determination to risk her own life to conceive, give birth, and become a mother touched the hearts of millions of Chinese netizens and people globally. The story quickly spread after being shared on Chinese news websites, garnering widespread online attention.
Hu Lu, since childhood, was born with a severe case of brittle bone disease. The bone abnormalities also caused her to have spinal deformity and various other illnesses. Despite facing numerous hardships and poverty, Hu Lu actively participated in community activities for people with disabilities.
This disabled woman happened to meet Kay, a hairdresser who also had physical disabilities but could still walk. He was impressed by Hu Lu’s optimism and zest for life. The couple fell in love and got married in 2014.
Even as husband and wife, Kay and Lu never thought about having children because they believed it was beyond their capabilities. However, an unexpected event occurred when Hu Lu discovered she was pregnant in December 2015. Kay initially thought it was an “accident” and suggested to Hu Lu to consider terminating the pregnancy as doctors warned that the baby could inherit brittle bone disease. Initially, Hu Lu also had similar thoughts. However, when she saw the ultrasound image of the fetus for the first time, she suddenly felt a loss of spirit.
After undergoing genetic screening at the hospital, it was found that the probability of passing the disease to the child was relatively low. Therefore, the pregnant woman with disabilities decided to keep the baby and convinced her husband.
Although the decision to keep the child meant facing many difficulties, even life-threatening ones, this mother remained determined. She was admitted to the hospital early for meticulous monitoring by doctors. Throughout her hospitalization, Kay remained by her side.
Already facing challenges in daily life, Hu Lu’s spinal deformity worsened during pregnancy, causing her to experience excruciating pain every day. The ultrasound examinations were also not easy.
And at 30 weeks of pregnancy, after nearly 8 months of strenuous pregnancy, Lu and Kay finally welcomed their first child into the world, healthy and strong. The small family of the disabled mother now finds greater happiness than ever, as giving birth to a child may not be too difficult for other women, but for her, it is truly a miracle.
