A Chinese couple from Hubei province is urgently seeking assistance for their three-month-old son, who was born with a rare condition called polydactyly. Baby Honghong possesses an astonishing 15 fingers and 16 toes, making a total of 31 digits. This extraordinary occurrence has set a new Guinness World Record, captivating the attention of people worldwide.

Local doctors informed Honghong’s parents that surgical intervention would be an immensely challenging task. Determined to find a solution for their son, they are actively exploring alternative methods and seeking help from the medical community.

Polydactyly, characterized by the presence of extra fingers or toes, occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 births. However, having as many as 11 additional fingers, as Honghong does, is exceptionally rare. Interestingly, Honghong’s mother also has polydactyly in her hands and feet, prompting her to undergo numerous check-ups and ultrasounds during pregnancy. Despite these precautions, the severity of Honghong’s condition surpassed all expectations.

Professor Liu Hong, from the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics at Hubei Provincial People’s Hospital, explained to Honghong’s father, Zou Chenglin, the challenging nature of the required surgical procedure. However, due to Honghong’s young age, anesthesia is not currently an option. The surgery must take place between six months and one year of age, before the bones fuse together.
