Accidentally Causing Opponent’s Leg to Break, Marcelo Breaks into Tears
The former Real Madrid star, Marcelo, never anticipated that his ball-handling maneuver would result in such a grievous injury to his opponent.
The incident unfolded in the 55th minute during the match between Argentinos and Fluminense in the 2023 Copa Libertadores.
Marcelo, as usual, executed a skillful dribble, evading the marking of all three Argentinos defenders.
However, the Fluminense player inadvertently stomped on Luciano Sanchez’s leg, causing his leg to buckle under the impact.
Marcelo was overcome with emotion, shedding tears right there on the field, consumed by his concern for his opponent. He dropped to his knees and sobbed uncontrollably. He understood the potential severity of the injury inflicted upon the Argentinos player, which could even lead to a career-ending situation.
He couldn’t believe his eyes. As soon as he saw his opponent lying on the ground, Marcelo proactively stopped the play.
The 35-year-old defender received a red card from the referee for this challenge, even though it was unintentional, while Luciano Sanchez of Argentinos was attended to by medical staff and carried off on a stretcher.
The match concluded with a 1-1 draw. Personally, Marcelo will likely forever remember this incident in his career.
After the match, the former Real Madrid defender shared, “Today, I had to go through a very difficult moment on the field. I inadvertently caused a fellow colleague a serious injury. I want to wish you a speedy and full recovery, Luciano Sanchez.”
This is an unfortunate incident.
Certainly, the Brazilian defender had no intention of harming his opponent.
