Koko the Gorilla’s Heartwarming Adoption of Two Baby Kittens
Koko the gorilla, known for her proficiency in American Sign Language, experienced a heartwarming connection with two baby kittens as a result of her inability to have offspring.
On her 44th birthday, she received a special gift that would forever touch her heart. A box filled with kittens was presented to her, and Koko was given the opportunity to select two of them as her own pets, while the remaining cats were adopted into loving homes.
The first feline companion Koko received was named “All Ball” back in 1984, after she expressed her desire for a cat through sign language and expressed dissatisfaction with a toy version. Koko shares her living space at the Gorilla Foundation in Redwood City, California, with her devoted trainer, Francine Patterson.
Patterson reveals that Koko has an impressive understanding of 2,000 English words and effectively communicates with her trainers through over 1,000 signs in “Gorilla Sign Language.” When Koko learned of All Ball’s passing, she expressed her grief by shedding tears and signing the words “Sleep cat.”
Koko’s bond with the kittens exemplifies the depth of her emotional capacity and her innate ability to form loving connections. Despite her own inability to bear offspring, she found solace and companionship in these innocent and vulnerable creatures, demonstrating her nurturing instincts and the compassion she holds within her gorilla heart.
The story of Koko’s adoption of the kittens serves as a testament to the universal language of love and the incredible resilience of animals in fostering deep emotional connections across species boundaries.
