Manchester United’s Season Kickoff Clouded by Absences: Hurdles for Ten Hag Against Wolverhampton

In the kickoff to the 2023/24 Premier League season, Manchester United finds itself in an unexpectedly tense situation. While teams like Man City, Arsenal, and Newcastle have commenced the season with victories, the pressure on Manchester United and other major clubs is nothing short of immense.

The clash between Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers is the marquee fixture of the opening round of the Premier League 2023/24 season. This match is set to take place on August 15th. However, just a day prior to the season opener, fans of the Red Devils received disheartening news regarding the team’s roster from the camp of manager Erik Ten Hag.

According to reports from the Daily Express, Manchester United might be without the services of up to 6 players for the Wolves match due to injuries, not to mention 3 players involved in transfer-related issues. The situation is compounded by the fact that 4 additional players could also be missing, creating a potential personnel crisis.

Three young talents, Hojlund, Mainoo, and Amad Diallo, are sidelined for this fixture. Among them, Hojlund sustained a back injury during his time with Atalanta. Mainoo and Amad suffered injuries during the pre-season tour. Recently, the medical team of Manchester United confirmed veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton’s injury setback.

In addition to the aforementioned 4 players, manager Ten Hag might also have to do without the services of Malacia and Martial. These two players missed the pre-season tour due to their respective injuries, making it uncertain if they’ll be fit for the season opener.

Furthermore, Fred has bid farewell to the club to join Fenerbahce, while McTominay and Maguire are also on the path of departing. These players are listed for potential transfer by manager Ten Hag. Utilizing them in such a sensitive period is evidently not advisable.

Considering these developments, Manchester United could be without as many as 9 players, with Fred already having left Old Trafford for a medical check-up in Turkey before officially signing with Fenerbahce. As a result, the personnel puzzle is undoubtedly causing headaches for Manager Ten Hag.

Fortunately, in the recent friendly matches against Lens and Bilbao, Manchester United boasted a solid lineup, with key players taking the field and performing steadily. Bruno Fernandes, Rashford, and the Red Devils’ defensive line are all ready for the first match of the new season.
