Ronaldo Praises Saudi Arabia, Criticizes MLS as Unattractive
In recent times, with the significant investments in the Saudi Arabian professional league, Cristiano Ronaldo candidly expressed that this competition is more appealing than Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the new destination for Lionel Messi.
After a friendly match between Al Nassr and Celta Vigo early this morning (July 18th), where Ronaldo failed to find the net, leading to a devastating 0-5 defeat for his team, he made a statement. In a rather somber mood, Ronaldo said, “I will not return to playing in Europe. That chapter is closed.”
He asserted, “There’s a 100% chance I won’t return to playing in Europe. I believe the Saudi Arabian professional league is undoubtedly more attractive than the MLS in the United States. Now, I am ready to compete in Saudi Arabia, a destination where many players are heading.”
However, Ronaldo also attributed his decision not to return to Europe to the declining state of various European leagues, deeming them unworthy of his competitive spirit. “I am already 38 years old, and almost all European leagues have deteriorated. Only the English Premier League is worth considering,” the Portuguese superstar stated.
Ronaldo left Manchester United to join Al Nassr at the beginning of 2023, following the 2022 World Cup. He is earning a staggering 200 million euros per year under a contract that extends until 2025.
In his debut season, he quickly became the main goal scorer for Al Nassr. However, his team still ended the season empty-handed. In the upcoming season, he anticipates numerous challenges as top European stars have landed in the Middle East, including Benzema, Kante, and Brozovic.
It appears that, thanks to Ronaldo’s influence and the club’s formidable financial resources, Saudi Arabian teams engaged in an intense “arms race” during the summer of 2023. Not only did they secure experienced veterans, but they also attracted established players, such as Brozovic (30), Thiago Neves (28), and Milinkovic-Savic (28).
Meanwhile, it must be acknowledged that the MLS does not boast as many star players. Prior to welcoming Messi and Busquets, their roster included Douglas Costa, Riqui Puig, and Christian Benteke.
Overall, the Saudi Arabian professional league is gaining momentum with high-profile signings and an influx of talents, making it a more attractive destination for Ronaldo compared to a supposedly declining European football scene.
